Our Architectural Practice

Kelly-Tinker Architects offers its services to both commercial and residential clients. We are equipped to handle projects as large as a hotel (see Holiday Inn Express) or as small as a carport (see Heirich Residence). We would be happy to discuss your new business or your new home as well as renovations and additions to existing structures.

In the commercial sector, we have designed for a wide range of building types including restaurants, recreational facilities, office buildings, lodging, and light industrial. Although most of our clients have been located in Washtenaw County, our work is sprinkled throughout the Detroit Metro Area and even out of state (see Thierstein Residence).

Site planning to meet local codes and ordinances is always needed for additions or new construction. Site plans tend to be very complex, integrating information from several sources. In recent years, code enforcement officials have adopted stricter procedures and requirements on building projects. We have an excellent track record for site plan approval upon first submittal.

All construction now requires adherence to the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). We are adept at incorporating ADA features such as larger restrooms and entrance ramps into the fabric of existing buildings. Both the Neahtawanta Inn renovation and addition and the Lambert Residence addition were conceived specifically with this in mind.

Several of our projects have involved buildings with distinct historical character or which were on the historic building register. These often require careful documentation of existing conditions, research on materials and methods of construction, skillful presentation of the client's intent, and negotiations with local historic commissions.

Our energy expertise allows us to handle mechanical and electrical plans in house for many projects. For large or complex buildings, we will contract these services to local engineering firms. We also have longstanding contact with consultants for air quality testing and sick building syndrome remediation.

Our small size means that our clients receive personal attention directly from an architect. For large or complex building programs, or for expedited construction document time lines, we contract with other small architectural firms to provide the staffing required by our clients. We also offer our services to other architectural firms for special joint projects.
