Carousel Bldg - Greenfield Village, Dearborn, MI Completed May, 1998 |
|
Greenfield Village is a collection of turn-of-the-century buildings brought to the Dearborn, Michigan, site by the Henry Ford Museum to provide visitors with a taste of the life and technology from that era. The Carousel Pavilion has been a popular attraction for many years, offering rides on the handmade merry-go-round inside to kids from 1 to 100. In 1997 the Museum decided to house an educational facility on its grounds. The old carousel building was located in the selected area and would be renovated for use as a classroom/office building. It was decided to build a new larger Pavilion in a more central location in Greenfield Village. The site chosen was at the corner of Cheapside and Christie Streets. Joe Ceccato, the Project Manager, was instrumental in the design and construction of this wonderful facility. The plans called for a square building, eighty feet on each side, with an octagonal clerestory rising to surround the carousel. Each corner of the square would be utilized for functions including ticket sales, concessions, mechanical, and storage. An extensive foundation was required to support the Carousel, itself, and provide access to its mechanical apparatus and pipe organ. |
