Thierstein Residence, Yachats, Oregon Completed May, 1991 |
|
This building was designed as a retirement home for Joan & Eldred Thierstein. It is located in Yachats, Oregon at the end of a cul-de-sac on a steep mountainside drive overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The house perches 25' above the cul-de-sac, a shining presence among its green hillside surroundings. It has over 3000 square feet on three floors each with 9' ceilings. The home has been made completely wheel chair accessible and includes an interior elevator. All major spaces enjoy the expansive ocean view and have access to the outside. The huge 7' tall windows provide plenty of natural daylight and ventilation and they hinge inward for easy cleaning. There is an exterior deck with glass railing at each floor supported between twin octogonal towers. There is even a circular stair to a roof level deck for an unobstructed 360 degree panarama. The climate of the area is mild with temperatures rarely going above 80 degees or below 50, so a ceiling mounted electric radient heating system was designed to complement the octogonal layout of each major space. There is a south facing two story sunspace for plants which provides free supplemental heat from the sun. The structure was designed to withstand the high winds experienced along the Oregon coast and uses stainless steel flashing throughout to resist the corrosive effects of daily salt -laden morning fogs. |
